Waiting for My Dream Man

(This is the love story of Ola Pascual. We met on my Facebook Page.)

Nicola, or Ola to her closest friends, was dreaming.

She was seating in a bus, beside the window. She was enjoying the view that she always saw whenever she went home to her province.

Someone sat beside her. She did not acknowledge the presence. She was busy with her daydream.

Then the conductor asked where was she going.

For a moment, she just looked up. “I am going to… Baclaran?”

Hiding a small smirk, the conductor informed her. “The bus is going to Ilocos Sur.”

“Oh.” She was slow to react, still daydreaming. “I didn’t have enough money…”

“Don’t worry. I’ll pay for your fare.” The man beside her suddenly murmured.

She was startled. “But…”

“What’s your destination?”

She told him the name of her barrio.

He repeated it and added, “Make it two tickets, please.”

“We are from the same barrio?” she asked.

He just smiled then accepted the two tickets. He handed her one, touching her hand.

Accidentally at first, but his fingers lingered on her palm. Leaving behind a series of shivers…

She did not go back to daydreaming. Her attention was very much on him.

She smiled when he smiled. The eyes just stared and stared.

Ola couldn’t put a finger. He seemed familiar. His hair, his eyes, his smile. He grinned crookedly.

“Is there dirt on my face?”

She blinked. “I… none… but you look familiar,” she finished breathlessly.

“You, too.”

“Where do we first meet?”

“In Luneta?” he replied jokingly.

She didn’t answer. She was busily recalling where she first met him. She looked out the window, hoping to find inspiration.

When she turned her head, just like in dreams, she found out they had alighted. She was in their house in the province. There were trees and plants everywhere.

The sun was up above in the sky. It was noon.

“Ola, it’s lunch time. Come. Let’s eat.” Her mother called at her.

Upon hearing her mother’s voice, Ola turned towards the house eagerly. Her mother had died four months earlier; but in her dreams, she was very much alive.

“Mother!” Ola ran towards her mother. Hugging her very tightly, she kissed both her wrinkled cheeks over and over. “I’ve never told you that I love you.” She was crying as she mumbled the words.

“Well, you just told me, Ola. I love you, too.” Her mother kissed whispered. “I came back because I was worried about you.”

“Why are you worried? I’m fine.” She whispered back.

“You don’t have anyone with you. I don’t want you to grow old alone.”

“Oh, Mother!”

When she pushed to look at her mother, she found the man at the bus. He was holding her in his arms.

“You remember me now?”

“Yes…” She became breathless.

Ola woke up suddenly. She was lying on her double bed. She turned her head towards the side where her mother had slept.

She leaped off the bed and went to her wardrobe. She was keeping a box there. It was full of old stuffs.

She rummaged through the old photographs until she found the one. It was a stolen shot. Taken a long time ago. They were both looking at the far horizon, close to each other but not touching.

Her eyes traced his features. He was not looking at the camera but he was recognizable. He was the man in her dreams.

Yes, dreams. She was dreaming about him every time. Each time, she couldn’t remember him at first.

And then, her dreams would end by the time she remembered him.

God knew, she tried to forget him. She never refer to him by name, just her Dream Man.

It was today that she also dreamt of her late mother. Did it mean Ola has her blessing?

Her heartbeat thundered. ‘Oh, Mother, thank you!’

Then she whispered to the wind: “Dream Man, I’ll be waiting for you!”

Inspired by the song, “Right Here Waiting” (Richard Marx)

Lyrics:

Right Here Waiting (Richard Marx)

Oceans apart day after day
And I slowly go insane
I hear your voice on the line
But it doesn’t stop the pain

If I see you next to never
How can we say forever

Wherever you go
Whatever you do
I will be right here waiting for you
Whatever it takes
Or how my heart breaks
I will be right here waiting for you

I took for granted, all the times
That I thought would last somehow
I hear the laughter, I taste the tears
But I can’t get near you now

Oh, can’t you see it baby
You’ve got me going crazy

Wherever you go
Whatever you do
I will be right here waiting for you
Whatever it takes
Or how my heart breaks
I will be right here waiting for you

I wonder how we can survive
This romance
But in the end if I’m with you
I’ll take the chance

Oh, can’t you see it baby
You’ve got me going crazy

Wherever you go
Whatever you do
I will be right here waiting for you
Whatever it takes
Or how my heart breaks
I will be right here waiting for you
Waiting for you
